Gear: La Sportiva Prodigio Stone-Blue/Moonlight Demo

Baby’s first 50 miler! Overall happy with this if a little disappointed with the ending. Davide hooked me up with some Prodigios that came in clutch after deciding yesterday I wasn’t thrilled with any of my shoe choices after seeing the course. First time running in them EVER and absolutely zero issues. Probably went out a little too hard but not terribly so. Was fighting calf cramps all day and basically had a PH1500 in my cheek most of the race to keep the legs functional. Came in under or at my 8:00 A goal at the 25%, turnaround, and even 75% aid stations but at the top of the hill my GI turned against me. What should have been my shining moment to bomb the downhill and pick off some places turned into agony and I could barely run a lot of it. I took two poop breaks, that only kinda sorta helped. I have since learned that bombing your system with sodium to save your calves also has a serious diuretic/laxative effect. On top of that, I think I’m ahead of my skis on fueling, trying to put down too many grams of carbs that I haven’t earned with gut training yet. Still lots of learning and practicing to do here. Lizzie Shell and Brett Tinkham were the best possible crew - never let me stop! They got lots of compliments! Despite the rough last downhill half marathon, I still hit the B goal of 9 hours. 25/526 overall 20/376 men 5/127 age group
